Il Formicone, one of the oldest trattorias in the Vignola area, was established in the early twentieth century as a horse post station where wayfarers could find refreshment for themselves and their horses before facing the long journey towards the Apennines. In the 1950s it became a tavern and was taken over by the Scelleri family in 1979.
The cuisine is the result of the numerous influences the deep-rooted culinary traditions of this zone has undergone: in fact, the desire for quality and creativity combine with the cultural and food and wine heritage of Modena and Bologna.
All products are chosen from local suppliers, situated within a range of not more than 30/40 km, and the food and wine served promote local culinary traditions, reinterpreting and revisiting them.
The care taken in choosing quality ingredients can also be seen in the dedication with which the historical vinegar cellar is run; situated in the attic, it produces the “family’s” fragrant, velvety balsamic vinegar, as dictated by local tradition.
Il Formicone offers a tranquil atmosphere and warm hospitality where customers can savour dishes in their own time and if they wish, can also take a short tour of the Scelleri family vinegar cellar where they can admire the precious bottles containing their “balsamic treasure” all lined up next to each other.
